The Science of Soft

Photography by: Amy Keith

Saint Haven SoftTM fabric is crafted from sustainably grown and harvested beech trees from Portugal. Through an environmentally friendly process, the pulp of beech trees is carefully spun into ultra-fine, resilient textile fibers. Beech tree pulp is significantly more eco-friendly than Merino wool or organic cotton—nine times more sustainable than wool, eleven times more sustainable than conventional cotton, and two times more sustainable than organic cotton, to be precise. (Beech tree forests require less land for cultivation and substantially less water to grow than thirsty cotton plants do). What results from the woven beechwood fibers is silky Lenzing Modal, a luxury fabric in its own right that’s known for its gentle, whisper-soft feel.

“soft enough” isn’t good enough, especially when it comes to what touches our children’s skin.

But the quest for softness didn’t end with Lenzing Modal. We employed a new, proprietary treatment on our Modal that makes it even softer: A non-toxic enzyme dip that dramatically softens fabric while maintaining durability. The resulting fabric is exceptionally skin-safe: Hypoallergenic and antimicrobial, the beechwood fibers are naturally moisture-wicking and free of chemicals and animal products. The dyes we use are nontoxic and environmentally friendly, and safe for even the most sensitive skin. The breathable weave supports body temperature regulation, and is built without tags, buttons, or the sorts of stealthy itchy seams that can drive you and your kids crazy. We designed all our clothing with 4-way stretch to accommodate all body shapes and sizes—so the fit is not too tight, and not too loose.

Softness and eco-friendliness aren’t enough, though—we care just as much about the people who are doing the making, too. Across every part of our supply chain, from fiber extraction to garment delivery to donating our used clothing, we have scrutinized our ethical standards to make sure our business practices are fair to all. To ensure we leave minimal environmental impact and empower the communities where we work, we invest in internationally respected partnerships and certifications. We are proudly recognized for meeting rigorous standards of social and environmental performance, accountability, and transparency. And in our work with the Fair Labor Association, we’ve committed ourselves to upholding fair labor treatment and responsible sourcing practices. It’s the right thing to do, and the right way to treat people—and supports the sort of world we want our kids to grow up in. And we understand, too, that there’s no point in making clothing that needs to be painstakingly hand-washed and line-dried in the shade; all our clothes can be machine-washed and tumble-dried without pilling, shrinking, or color fading. These clothes are meant to be worn, lived in, and loved—not left hanging in a closet for a special occasion. Our fabric is sustainable and luxurious, but it’s also refreshingly low-maintenance—thoughtfully designed for both active, growing children and the parents charged with running after them. Here, our Saint Haven SoftTM fabric stats at a glance: • Machine-safe • 4-way stretch • Skin-safe • Breathable and moisture wicking • Hypoallergenic • Anti-microbial • Sustainable and ethically manufactured • Guaranteed to fit
